Thirsty in the Middle East
Our 30 hour stop over in the Kingdom of Bahrain (in the Middle East just east of Saudia Arabia) was really interesting and I'm really glad we took advantage of that opportunity. The wealth in that country is quite amazing (oil industry) with Mercedes and Beamers everywhere. The men wore their white birkas and woman in their black ones (some covering their faces) in 40+ degree weather. Another interesting thing was that we were there during the holy month of "Ramadan" (muslim fasting from sunrise to sunset) so it was illegal for us to eat or drink in public while the sun was up (not good for dehydration in the sweltering heat). As soon as sundown came, the mosques pumped out prayers that could be heard for miles and we joined in for a Ramadan buffet feast which was incredible; figs, hummous, fish, baklava, persian/arabic spiced meats, tamarind juice and many many other things which we could not identify but were yummy and fun to try.
