Shimla's connection to India's history

Shimla is a city high in the Indian Himalayas (2200 metres) that used to be the summer residence of the British viceroys up until 1947 when India got it's independence from Britain.

Walking along the main street (the Mall) is like being in England. There are tutor-style buildings everywhere you look and an Anglican church is the city's focus point. A very strange sight especially when there are monkeys climbing all over the place.

I visited the Viceroy's Lodge which looks like a Scottish palace. In this beautiful building, many historical decisions about India were made. Mahatma Gandhi had many meetings here leading up to the country's independence and the decision to separate Pakistan into it's own country was also made in this building.
